It's about TIME!
06.29.04 (10:46 pm) [edit]
|
I'm almost done with the first half of this UCan2 shell from Chicknits... I've done all the armhole decreases. Now I can work even until it's time for the shoulder decreases. I'll be glad when this is over  Oh but wait! There's More!! This is flat work so I'll have to do a back side... Oh to find a pattern for a top in the round that will actually fit me! (maybe what I need to do is just be SMALLER!). Pics tomorrow.

Knitting Mania revisited
06.24.04 (3:45 pm) [edit]
You guessed it! More socks.. [image]ladybean_909995887 .jpg[/image] [image]ladybean_370900214 .jpg[/image]
But after this I'm going to be finishing up the handles on that FMB and then I'm on to start my first shell top! I've got the crocheted granny blanket on semi-hold. The prospective recipient now understands what's taking so long.. And that she will be getting soon enough!
Also she's going to lend me her turntable.... LP's to CD's HERE I COME!!! *dancing fool*
|
|
|

*sigh* Oh well..
06.23.04 (9:13 am) [edit]
I've come to realize that this second FMB will NOT be a knitting tote. I just can't bring myself to knit THAT many rows. IF I should be insane enough to try again I WILL use double strands(maybe even TRIPLE!) and size 15 needles to work it. This is just TOO many rows! UGH...
Right now I'm adding the funfur top rows. After that, it'll get another row of regular yarn and then the bind off for the handles. I'm thinking I will double strand those for security. But. :( I'll have to BUY a knitting tote.. I just can't take it anymore. I see all these nice bags that are big enough for my knitting and all my other junk(read: baby stuff) so I won't have to carry 80 million different bags at once. Something I won't MIND putting on the floor to knit from. Something I can use around the house and carry out so I won't need to be switching bags and losing shit all the time
One of these days.. Oh but I DID see some nice beach bags at Target. I'm not too picky about color and I'm not one who believes you can't carry a BRIGHT-ASS-ORANGE bag in the dead of January. I'm also thinking about making a bag from fabric. But I'm not too sure about that because well, I can't sew for the life of me and that would make it a chore and not a pleasure..

Almost there!!
06.22.04 (4:29 am) [edit]
Yesterday I got the double-male cable I need to get my turntable connected to my computer. But, unless I do a major overhaul of my room, I'll have to install all the necessary components and software to hubby's computer. hmmmm... I have to see about this
On another front, School is almost out!! Yes, I know, everywhere else in the country school lets out in May, but here in NY it goes til the end of June and starts again in September.
As for knitting.. I'm still working on the second Crusoe sock, and after that I must finish my FMB. I need the needle for the FMB for my second attempt at a top for myself. Hopefully I can pull this off without fuckering it up!!
Wish me luck!!

Thanx to Island Artist!! I checked out Radio Shack per her suggestion and THEY DO sell the kind of male-to-male cable I need to hook at turntable to my computer!!! Now all I need is to find a Radio Shack near me that has one

Crusoe has JUST been rescued!!
06.20.04 (5:43 am) [edit]
 The designer of the Crusoe sock(which I just found out is NOT from the current Knitty.com, but from Spring 2003) named this sock Crusoe because the stitch technique is called stranded! Get it? Well I've just rescued it from its errors.. I hope she doesn't get mad

06.19.04 (11:03 am) [edit]
Ok. I have unlocked(or so I THINK) the mystery of WHY the Crusoe sock http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsp... was such a problem for another knitter aside from myself. It appears that the heel turn is wrong because the designer put in the incorrect number of turn stitches.. I tried it her way and it was indeed, wrong.. The middle of the heel is NOT where it should be.. So, I'm going to follow the standard heel turn and see if that works.. what a bitch ripping back, tho

06.18.04 (6:34 am) [edit]
These pics are of me wearing my new Scrapsocks. The frontal image is to show just where the sock yarns changed. So, these are not exactly identical, but that's ok. I'll tell you one thing, these socks are more comfortable than any pair I've made so far

Ugh! called myself being smart... This Crusoe sock pattern calls for 24 stitches in 4 inches.. which translates into 6 stitches per inch. Now, I already had size 1 needles(which the pattern calls for) and I figured I'd need size 2's because I get 8 st/inch with the 1s. So I went and bought 2's, and I'm getting 7st/in.. so now I need 3's!!! DAMMIT!!!
Geez, how loose is the designer knitting if they can get 6 stitch per inch on size 1????

They Loved it!!
06.17.04 (4:18 am) [edit]
Last night, I went to an International Knitting Meetup, which is held every 3rd Wednesday all around the world.. I took my daughter with me. I'd been trying to teach her to knit, but it wasn't working well.
While we were there, a nice lady(ugh, why can't I remember her name?...did she even tell me? ) attempted to teach Nadia and she did a little better. I learned that when teaching, you don't make the child knit the first few rows.. She really encouraged me to keep trying to teach Nadia, even though I suck at teaching!:))
Some of the ladies saw my Scrapsock I was working on and they loved it!! Made me smile.. When I first got there I asked if I was in the right place, and then sat at another table!! I'm too shy for my own good sometimes.. But I'd been meaning to get to a knitting meetup for months now, and I FINALLY got there! I do plan to go to the next one...
I also switched those metal DPNs to birch ones.. they were too long and strangely enough, while most people say they DON'T like the shorter ones because they poke themselves too much, I find I DON'T poke myself with them.
And... you guessed it.. More Koigu   I couldn't resist.. Plus I wanted something BRIGHT for the Crusoe socks and the Koigu I have isn't as bright as what I just got. Not to mention, I now have enough for scrapsocking just with Koigu.. this should be FUN!!!

Day 3 of Operation Wean!!
06.16.04 (4:17 am) [edit]
Ronnie has decided she likes apples. I gave her some applesauce and she seemed to take it in without as much mess as before... The milk continues to work well, no bowel problems as far as I can tell..
I'm working on the mate to my latest Scrapsock creation. I'm almost up to the heel flap. I did not make up the pattern. I got it here: http://knittingfun.homestead.com/files/sock_monkey.htm" title="http://knittingfun.homestead.com/files/sock_monkey.htm" target="_blank"http://knittingfun.homestead....
All I did was use my own color imagination.. I will post a pic of them on my feet when they're done.
Edit to add: I should point out after attempting to turn the heel for the second time, that something is wrong with this pattern.. I followed it to the letter, but the stitch distribution is NOT correct following the pickup of the stitches.. So, Unless you are familiar with sock making.. proceed with this pattern with caution!!

Good News!!
06.15.04 (9:25 am) [edit]
Well, I got some good news today... My 4 year old has been accepted to the Prekindergarten program at his big sister's school! Now, some would argue that that's not ok, because in order to get in, the child must show a lack somewhere in their academic capabilities. If a child going into PreK already knows their ABC's and 123's they won't get in cause they already know what they need to know to do well in Kindergarten!
But, it's a good thing, because JV needs interaction with others his age in a way I can't always provide. Most of the other moms around here work so their child is in full daycare; they'd only be switching because school based PreK is free. JV also WANTS to go. He's been begging since I first took his sister 3 years ago!! And of course, I could use a little break
Nadia has been evaluated for a learning disability, and according to the Special Ed committee she's not as far behind as I thought and does NOT need remediation or a special class!! It's been about 6 months since I began the quest for getting her into a special class and in that time there HAS been improvement. She does appear to have a problem with distinguishing differences in pattern symbols but that is another story. So, for now, all is good with school, which by the way is OUT in about two weeks :))

Day 2 of Operation Wean
06.15.04 (5:08 am) [edit]
This is the second day I've given the baby whole milk instead of just formula.. Yesterday she did really well in terms of not vomiting or having the shits.. but I have to work on getting her to eat finger foods.. I have NO clue what to give her. I tried those biter biscuits and she lobbed off a chunk and almost choked! So that's out.
She's teething right now, so everything that she puts in her mouth that isn't a bottle, is something to teeth on. So tho it may TASTE good(french fries), most of it winds up being spit/drooled back out and onto her clothes  How am I supposed to keep her nourished like this!!! What am I doing wrong???

Scrapsock!
06.14.04 (10:32 am) [edit]
You've heard of Hoobastank, and Godsmack?, Well, this is ScrapSock!!
This is it!! This cuff down sock is made up of scraps of Fortissima Colori (cuff to where it's red is one color and then from there to the yellow is the other), and Koigu(yellow). [image]ladybean_803669841 .jpg[/image]
This is also my first sock on double pointed needles.. YAY ME!! I think the fit is more snug with this technique than I've been getting with the magic loop..

It's 1:33 am. do you know where your socks are?
06.13.04 (9:39 pm) [edit]
Yep, at it again! I finally got the hang of DPNs so.. I've been knitting a sock from the scraps left from other socks I'd already made. So far, it's coming out ok.. Only thing is.. it's a one-sock-at-a-time venture. Yeah, I've read about people who can do 2 on one set of dpns, or maybe they mean 2 sets, I don't know.. but i'm just getting the hang of ONE set...
We went to Outback yesterday! OMG the Drover's Platter.. The ribs melt in your mouth and the chicken!! wooooooooooooo peppery but still nice. just plain JUICY! Why can't I cook like that??
I've also decided that the best way to transfer all my vinyl to CD would be to just get the stand alone CD recorder.. So, I'll have to put that venture on hold for a while.. I've found a recorder that has a 20GB hard drive on it! Then, not only could I put my old LPs onto CD I could effectively store all my digital music on it too!! then I could mix and match as I please! My music tastes are such that, I just might want to hear something from the 80's and something from last week all on the same CD.. I'm weird like that..
But a lot of what I want to archive is really stuff from my childhood and younger days.. stuff I can't for the LIFE of me find online.. even if I WERE to use something legitimate like those 99cents-a-song file sharing servers...
Oh well, back to bed.

If you're using Pinnacle Systems Studio 9, with no problems, lucky you.. I have this program and it's SUCKING MAJOR ASS. It keeps crashing, hanging, and otherwise dying on me. I've tried patches, rebooting and I'd reinstall but I can't find the FUCKIN DISK! Great. just great!!

Madness 101
06.10.04 (11:28 am) [edit]
I just tried to teach my 7 year old [image]ladybean_511516873 .jpg[/image] to knit. Now, for some of you, you might think that's mental suicide.... But lots of knitters started that young, if not YOUNGER. MY problem is.. I'm a rightie and she's a leftie!! That seriously complicates the issue. She automatically understood to do things in the direction that was most comfortable. As a right-handed continental-style knitter, my working yarn and old stitches are in the left hand.. and I move stitches to the right. She had it backwards which, is NORMAL for a leftie, but impossible for a rightie to TEACH a leftie.
There's a Knit out in the park this Sunday. I MIGHT just take her and have some one there teach her. Thing is.. will they want to teach a kid?? hmmmm

I don't believe this shit...
06.09.04 (6:09 pm) [edit]
Ok.. I went to BestBuy.. and learned that as far as is known, there are no such cables as needed to complete my LP-to-CD journey
I need: a turntable, an amplifier(or a turntable with one built in), and a special cable that would allow me to connect the headphone jack on the amp to the Line In jack on my computer sound card.
However, I can only find the cords that would connect the BACK of the amp(RCA cables) with a 1/8 in mini-jack that will fit in my sound card. I would, in effect, need a cable with two female ends.. If I were to connect the RCA-minijack to my computer I would blow it sky high!! Unless I can find such a cable.. the only other alternative is to get a stand-alone CD recorder and hook the turntable up to that as usual.. UGH. oh well, I don't have the money for that so..

We Did it!!
06.09.04 (7:20 am) [edit]
No, not Dora.. *I* did it!! Remember when I said I needed a device to transfer analog music(my old LPs) into digital so I could burn them to CD? Well, it turns out... my lovely ADS Tech DVDExpress box can also function for audio only... HEHEHE. I think... If I can get the program to divide the info into audio AND video channels( and really, why the hell WOULDN'T I be able to do that...) then all I really need is a turntable to play my old albums.. hehehe.. I'm going NUTS with the possibilities.. More later!!!
Edit to add: Well, that sucks monkey chunks!! Although it can record by seperating the audio and video into separate streams, I can't burn any of this information to a Disc in its current format, and as far as I know.. I can't convert the files after recording either... :(( So much for being CHEAP

Last week my first-grader had a field day. I have no still images of that moment, only video which I am trying to get onto VideoCD for keepsaking. But I did get some pics of the rest of us later that day. [image]ladybean_730318444 .jpg[/image] Peek A Boo!!

Guaifenesin, an expectorant found in many cough syrups, has been shown to increase a woman's fertility by making cervical mucus more receptive to semen?
Tendonitis affects more than 18.5 million Americans?
I have a chicken pox mark on my lower back?
Almost everyone who's ever HAD chicken pox still has a scar somewhere on their face, usually alongside their nose?(I'm one of them.)
The word 'chemistry' does NOT mean the study of chemicals, but, the study of things that are BLACK? (don't ask, but I read up on it, it's true!)
An ant could theoretically pull as much as 3 million times it's weight? (Think, ant pulling Ford Bronco!)
In comparison to their overall size, elephants brains are smaller than that of any other animal.
Amoebas HAVE no brain.
I'm probably making most of this crap up.. But it was fun coming up with it!

WAITING TO EXHALE
06.04.04 (11:37 am) [edit]
|
The report is in... The mass was a FIBROADENOMA!!!! I'm relieved but at the same time worried.. I know I know.. it's over for now, relax.. But I mean.. this is a hospital in a poor area of NYC and you KNOW how that goes. Are the pathologists wrong.. Did my doctor lie to me over the phone?(This after I cussed and hollered about how it's been two weeks and they NEED to either give me my results or tell me WHY it's taking so long..)... I still need to see the surgeon for scar follow-up.. And of course, there's still the chance that the benign mass enclosed a cancer cell or two.. Ok STOP... *runs screaming down the street*

Insanity
06.02.04 (2:10 pm) [edit]
You know, I've finally gotten my hands on copies of my mammography and u/s reports.. Although I understand everything on them, none of the info is turning on any lights for me. Either way, it's wait and see what the biopsy report says.
I can look online and find stuff that would have me believe the info indicates a cancer, and then on another site it'll say it's likely to be benign but will LOOK malignant until a biopsy is done.. Ugh.. I lost 8 lbs since march. That's a lb per gray hair. I'm going NUTTO!! :? :(
|
|
|

Stressed
06.02.04 (3:48 am) [edit]
I just noticed more gray hairs in my head!! So far that makes what,? 8? I know, I know.. I've been stressed lately so of course the hairs will come right? I've been thinking about going in and reviewing my chart. Tomorrow seems the likely day I'll get word of the results because that's the day my surgeon is in the medical center I use. He works out of more than one. I just can't shake my feelings about some of the things I read while I glanced at my chart last week. Ok, so I only read one word but it stuck out so much and upon further research it turns out to be something REALLY bad. I don't know if that was there before my biopsy or after. The surgeon doesn't want to say anything to me about what he saw in the preliminary exam of the tumor. I barely got a chance to ask if he got all the tumor when he DID remove the lump.
So here I sit, trying to figure out what happened with my mom, even though I wasn't really AWARE of what was going on with her. I also probably would NOT find anything in her chart as it's been more than 10 years. I asked my friend's mom about her situation but there wasn't much I could apply because she wound up with a mastectomy and lymph node removal. What she fails to realize is that angiosarcomas are cancers that ORIGINATE in the bloodvessels and lymph vessels, the pathways by which cancer spreads to other parts of the body.. Angiosarcoma is one of the words I saw in my chart.. only about 300 cases of angiosarcoma are recorded in the history of cancer study BUT, I get the funny feeling I'm one of those 'rare' situations. Of course it could be that the doctor's ramblings mean they want to do the biopsy to RULE OUT an angiosarcoma. And this possibility is supported by the fact that, based on my research, angiosarcomas of the breast often start out looking like a fibroadenoma or sclerosing adenosis(two common benign tumors) until further testing proves otherwise. So I'm guessing the basic testing such as mammogram and sonogram point to something benign and the hold-up on the results is to double-check the benign-ness(is that a word? ) of the mass.
I'm really hoping that it's either benign or an in situ tumor. Of course in situ is a pre-cancer which would usually warrant treatment as if it were a full blown malignancy. In that case I'd opt for a double mastectomy to keep from going through (at least) this again. Thing is, would my state-funded health insurance pay for reconstruction?? Prolly not. cheap fucks!

This'll be nice!
06.01.04 (3:57 pm) [edit]
I finally have 1/2 the coveted electronics devices I'd been seeking. Namely, I have a Video capturing device. The only problem is... it is a High Speed USB device and I had no idea my USB ports are not High Speed! Duh! So, video capture is a little delayed but it does work. I'm guessing I'll have to tape everything first and THEN add it to the puter. Other than that, it should be ok...
I was at my friend's house today and I eyeballed her turntable  but I couldn't bring myself to ask her if I could borrow it. Now wouldn't be a good time anyway, as I haven't yet bought the CD recorder I'll need.
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEE
