Rhymes With Mango

And here it is!!!
07.31.04 (7:39 am)   [edit]
This hat was a cinch! Although I think it's a bit big on me. I increased to 104 stitches. I'm thinking maybe 96 would have been better before lengthening it.. I know now to only make Ronnie's at like 72 and Nadia's at 88. I might even make one for JV in another color!!

newborn hat

Well actually, it's for ME! But it's an Umbilical Cord Hat. It's called that because of the 'stem' at the time, which sorta resembles a tied-off umbilicus. The original pattern titled as such can be found in 'Stitch N' Bitch' by Debbie Stoller. But, that pattern is really for a baby hat. I found a very similar hat(although I'm not sure how identical the pattern instructions are) for children AND adults, and that is the one I made it from. It's in "Knitting For Dummies", by (at last count) Pam Allen.

Check em out!

Let the Destashing Begin!!
07.28.04 (3:34 pm)   [edit]
Whoooooo so many patterns, so little time, WAY too much yarn  Let's see, I've got that funky little 'adult' umbilical cord hat from Knitting for Dummies(don't laugh, you know that was prolly the FIRST book you picked up if you learned from a book), with this yarn

and maybe even a scarf to match.. or maybe I'll make the original Umbilical cord hat from Stitch N Bitch for my little girls..

Anouk, from knitty using various colors of Red Heart, and that Log Cabin baby blanket with the Bernat Silky soft I can't seem to find yardage info on...

I'm also almost ready for the heel flap on this knee sock for my oldest girl:

I hope she appreciates it.. with all her, 'Mommy will you make me some socks'... I've had to rip this sucker once already because the sock generator thingy made the numbers too big... Oops..

I still have to finish the mates to the other socks I made.. then I think I'll go back to destashing while I save up for a swift and ballwinder(can we say Xmas???) Well, I can always dream...

Bloody hell!!
07.27.04 (7:11 am)   [edit]
If you see this sock calculator HTTP://WWW.PANIX.COM/~ILAINE/SOCKS.HTML
Don't use it! It's sucks.. I spent a day making a knee sock for my 7 year old.. and the thing didn't come out right. it was WAY too big.. Yeah I guess I COULD have just reduced the number of stitches.. but the thing should work right? The only part that was right was the length of the leg part.. I GUESS I could work on it some.. but DON'T count on this pattern generator..

ThangQ. Now back to your regularly scheduled whatever-you-were-doing.

Ugh, the horror!
07.26.04 (6:02 pm)   [edit]
So, I'm at my local Stitch N Bitch session and it's going so far so good. There's been some tension(mostly unresolved) but it wasn't too bad tonight. Then.. I was on my way HOME, and everyone in the train station was looking at me like I Had 30 heads... I just happen to look DOWN.. and there's a big crumb of the chocolate marble cake I had eaten at the meeting! Lovely.. WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME BEFORE I MADE A FOOL OF MYSELF

Great.. I feel a little better now

Second Sock Syndrome rearing it's head!
07.25.04 (10:26 am)   [edit]
Yep, I've got it.. Second Sock Syndrome. It's where you knit one sock of a pair and then don't knit the second right away. I've so many sock pattern ideas and such.. and I want to try them all. So, after I get one sock done, I'm off to start the next pair! Here's a pic of two socks I've done so far...
The first sock is with Sock It To Me by elann. It's an eyelet pattern but you can't really see it with that yarn. Funny thing, the pattern specifically said Jazz up your Self-striping socks! I guess it only works with SOME self-striping yarns, and not others.. The next sock is from Opal Inspiration. Interestingly enough, Opal, Sock it to Me, and LB Magic Stripes are all manufactered by the same Italian company.. So each brand has colorways which are identical to the other brands.. I've got to remember that when I buy sock yarns...

Enjoy!

Is there a medication for this??
07.23.04 (4:36 pm)   [edit]
I just spent the last 4 hours taking inventory on all my yarns and scraps. 74 Database records total! Can we say ADDICT? Then I took stock of all my needles.. Not bad in that department, few repeats. Next will be my pattern books and leaflets, not a lot of those either..

But Oh! Online patterns.. Gotta pull out the ream of paper and start printing! Oooooooooooweeeeeeeeeeeee ... Watch that first step, it's a DOOZY! At least this way I'll be better able to see what I have.. and do I WANT any of them???

Mid Year Resolution!
07.22.04 (10:54 pm)   [edit]
I have an amazingly large acrylic yarn stash. Unbelievable. So, I have decided that no matter WHAT I knit.... I will NOT buy new yarn until I've worked this stash down. This means one of two things:

1) I will either be making things out of acrylic even though the patterns call for wool or cotton.

2) The garment/project will have a bunch of different wild ass colors

This is of course, in exception of the two blankets I have in progress that are not for my household and therefore, if i run out I will HAVE to buy more.. but hey, they're still acrylic

I'd love to buy the yarns the patterns ask but I can't really afford to blow money on the stuff when I'm not that good a knitter. I've already faux pas'ed on the UCan2Shell yarn(fuckin Saucy  ). I don't want to do that again.

I just need to do something about this stash before hubby strangles me. With my own yarn, at that! Once I've reduced the stash to one bin(I have enough yarn for 4!) then I can start saving up and buying the goodies!

This does NOT include a ban on needles(heehee) I DO intend to splurge on whatever needles I need and don't already have.. so :P

To Slip or Not to Slip
07.18.04 (5:26 pm)   [edit]
I just washed my Crusoe Socks for the 3rd time. I really like that pattern. I'm seriously thinkin about using the other Koigu skeins to do more pairs like that. Although the pattern calls for a multi-color variegated yarn, I'd like to see what it'll look like in shades of the same color. Now, to just remember what size needle I used!

I already know I cast on with a size 9 needle.. but I can't remember if I got guage with the size 1 or 2 after that?? hmmmmm

Lincoln's Birthplace.... NOT!!
07.12.04 (6:47 pm)   [edit]
These are squares I'm making as part of the Log Cabin baby blanket I'm making for a friend.

[image]ladybean_124847166 4.jpg[/image]

Not a really complicated pattern.. but oh, sewing the squares together ought to be fun!!!

Coronet DONE!
07.09.04 (5:56 pm)   [edit]
I've finally finished Coronet. Why? I don't Know!! It's JULY  But I had to try it! I don't particularly like the top decreases... If I make it again I'll stop the even rounds sooner and decrease more smoothly than what it's asking for.. The pattern model doesn't really show the top of her head...

What do you think?? [image]ladybean_425208079 .jpg[/image]

Coronet
07.09.04 (1:52 pm)   [edit]
I've been working on Coronet some more.. it's about half done.. take a look!!

[image]ladybean_311712963 .jpg[/image]

At this point I'm not sure if I want to continue in the burgundy or use a black stripe. The main reason for switching colors is.. *gasp* I didn't really swatch before starting and tho it APPEARS this will fit nicely(it does fit around my head at least), I don't know if I'll have enough yarn. The pattern calls form Lamb's Pride and I'm using Patons Classic Wool. I don't think there's much guage difference in the two yarns, and the Patons actually has more yardage... Oh well..

*knock knock* Cable guy!(er.. lady...)
07.08.04 (7:39 pm)   [edit]
No. I didn't get a job at Time Warner. I've been practicing making cables!!! The Coronet hat from Knitty(gee, I seem to LIKE this place huh?) has a base made with a braided cable in the pattern and that is what you see here:
[image]ladybean_865369772 .jpg[/image]

I didn't do the provisional cast on like it said. Actually, I DID do it that way before but got messed up on the pattern repeat and had a hard time finding a good place to rip back to, so I just completely frogged it. I started up again, mainly just to get the practice(which is why I didn't do the PCO again..) and this time, managed to finish it without another headache!

To hell with it!!
07.06.04 (4:00 am)   [edit]
I'm sick of this Reynolds Saucy!! I've finished one half of the UCan2 shell and its' WAY too big. Now, I've heard that knitting with cotton is tricky because it stretches but this is ridiculous. I look at the finished piece and the tension is all over the place!!
Droopy stitches everywhere! I don't know if it's the braided aspect of the yarn(as opposed to plied) or what. I never liked how loosely it worked up.. and it just never felt RIGHT in my hands... ugh.. what a waste!!

I'm too disgusted to even take a picture of it...

 :!:

WIP
07.04.04 (10:28 am)   [edit]
I'm almost done with one of the Opal Inspiration socks. But you know.. I think I need to do something a bit more challenging in the sock department. I've got Cascade Fixation but it's plain white so the Broadripple pattern isn't exactly going to work. Besides, it calls for size 3 dpns and I dont' HAVE any.

Then there's the Chicknits shell I'm working on. I've decided to hold off on pics until it's complete because HELL, it just won't make sense until then. I've already finished one panel. all I need now, is to make the other and sew them together..

I still haven't gotten around to getting the yarn for Cheesylove. I'm also eyeballing Top Secret from Knitty. BUT the largest size is too small and I'm trying to figure out HOW to upsize it. the guage is 12 stitches per 4 inches, which translates to 3spi. My bust is 48-50in give or take so I need to kow how many to cast on. The largest size is 138 stitches cast on. but that doesn't figure with the gauge. So either I'm thinking wrong, or there's an error...

hmmmmm :?

And Finally the Bronx Zoo!!
07.02.04 (6:44 pm)   [edit]
It was Donation Day at the zoo(gosh I'm CHEAP  ) so we headed over there to visit the (ahem) In-laws...(Hey, Frank started it!) We didn't get any pictures with them, but we did get some pictures of their neighbors!

Ok.. Picture time again :)
07.02.04 (6:35 pm)   [edit]
I said I'd be going to the Bronx Zoo when I got REALLY bored.. well I went to the Aquarium first!! and look what I found :o
