The back portion of Big Sack is done! Faster than I thought for boring old stockinette stitch. So, as I promised I'm casting on for both sleeves at once! This oughta be fun. Having to switch from back-and-forth mode to back, back, and forth, forth
I'd like to thank Michelle from Orange Yarn, Please for her link to the pumpkin Dishcloth. That's not quite the one I was looking for(the one I wanted was actually made of orange yarn, natch) but it'll do :).
Nothing more to report, really, just thought I'd put something up cause I prolly won't blog again (at least not about Big Sack) until it's done.:D
ETA 10:39 PM:
Clapotis is back in business!! No pics, cause come on, you already seen the yarn I'm using.. It'll just look the same anyway. But this time she's slimmer. In fact, I'm already on the straight rows(middle section) and I'm still on the FIRST ball(of 6) of Kersti!! I might have me a hat and mittens to match after all!!

| So.... |
| 10.29.04 (4:23 pm) [edit] |
Nothing new to report really, still on Big Sack about a third of the way done with the back portion. I know one thing for sure, When I cast on for the sleeves, I'm going to do both at the same time!
As for clay-play, I managed to get the Premo! I keep hearing about. Got some translucent and mixed it with Fimo Soft. I must be doing something wrong, since these are supposed to be good for canework, cause my cane came out blurred again. Maybe I'm not using enough clay? or I'm not making my sheets thick enough? It's not like I plan on making MONEY off of my clay work(ok maybe I DID think about it for like... 10 seconds) but I'd like to know I can do stuff correctly, ya know?
Why have I only been working on one project lately? Even *I* don't know the answer to THAT one. Maybe I can restart Clapotis again and have that on the needles. I had that on a size 8 needle. Big Sack is on 7/9. And hmmm I could prolly wing a pair of socks.. But strangely enough I haven't really been in the mood to dye any yarn and I don't want to make socks unless it's from dyed yarn. I have the weekend to decide about that.
As for the mystery project I mentioned a while back? It's a hat :P. It's a bit big on me. Ok it's REALLY big on me. I might just unravel and reknit. It was supposed to be for my oldest daughter but if it's too big for ME you KNOW it'll be swimming on her! (it was supposed to be for her, anyway...)
I had wanted to knit some dishcloths with a relief-style pumpkin(in knitting this means knitting some stitches and purling others, which will result in the design popping out on the surface) but I can't find that bloody pattern anymore. I had it in my favorites before the big crash last month. But lucky me managed to screw EVERYTHING up and I lost all my info. Every attempt to search the web for it results in NIL. oh well, two days to Hallowe'en and I don't give a sh*t anyway :) (and I've got the nicest orange cotton too.. bleh..)
Attention Readers: If you are not a tblog user and are leaving comments, Please? leave your blog addy so I can find you and return the favor.(unless of course you don't HAVE a blog, teehee). Especially those of you asking me questions. I'd like to be able to actually respond to you  Some of you, I already have a link for you. Thanx. And remember, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

| 10.27.04 (3:31 am) [edit] |
Progress!! Yes! yes! Here's the front of Big Sack, all done and well, a little fookered at the top(it's a design element, dammit!) where I got all into finishing up and forgot to cross the cable one last time.. Oh well, that'll make it MY Big Sack... so Nyah!
I've cast on for the back already, am working on that. Probably won't post more pics of it til I've made it to a sleeve or something..
Here are some clay beads I made yesterday. I'm not that enthused with them, I need the better clay to make a cane. You see what I mean, I wound up having to just say F IT, and marbled the colors.. it was supposed to be a starburst of some sort.
I learned something interesting while working with those bamboo skewers I used to hold the beads.. they're just about a size 3 knitting needle . all I'd need is to sand them down a bit and wax them and Voila! wouldn't THAT be neat!?
And last but not least, here's the yarn I plan to use for my Cheesylove sweater:

I couldn't decide if I was going to make the hearts white or pink, so I ordered a ball of each. 8)

| And the Winner Is!.... |
| 10.26.04 (7:26 am) [edit] |
Fimo! I've tried the Sculpey clay and the Fimo clay and Fimo wins hands down. It IS a bit harder to knead at first BUT it doesn't break after baking the way Sculpey does and it's not as tacky while raw as Sculpey is. Fimo comes in better(in my opinion) and more colors than Sculpey.
Premo!Sculpey is supposed to be a competitor to Fimo, in that it still has the softer hand of Sculpey but still stronger than Fimo. So I'll have to get my hands on some of that. I've got some blue/orange marbled beads cooling, along with a blue/orange marbled pen/holder set. In two words, THEY SUCK! I think part of my problem is using the Sculpey. I mixed translucent Sculpey with orange and/or blue Fimo to make more clay(the Fimo is small) and to help with the kneading.. Well true to what I've read(late) that the Sculpey isn't really good for canework. so my cane became a mess FAST. so that's why the shit is marbled... Ugh... I learned didn't I?
No knitting today(yet). It's time for lunch so I've still got the rest of the evening to put some speed on Big Sack.
Worry not, Clapotis is still coming, just wanna get most of Big Sack done before I start..

| Have Craft, will become addicted... |
| 10.25.04 (9:19 pm) [edit] |
Yep, 'tis me. lookie what I got!!

Those are all my clay supplies. Don't ask me WHY or WHEN or HOW but I've got the clay craft bug. I'll say this, while it's fun, it's EXPENSIVE. I had NO idea I'd need more than what comes in the variety pack to cover ONE pen. See HERE for some instructions and to see what I am trying to do.
So, I guess I'll have to stick with bead making for now. which isn't BAD because I like beading and being creative. I'll post pics when the beads I made are done cooling and are glazed.
In other exciting news I got THIS in the mail today :

It's the brochure I got when I gave my name on a list to Stitches from the Heart. They're a charity knitting/crochet organization for donating yarn crafted blankets and hats for preemies. They also take yarn donations for seniors at nursing homes. I got on their list at the KnitOut/Crochet earlier this month. It's nice to know I can help.
Also, I just got a look at the Fall Surprise on Knitty.com!! I about cried when I saw it. It's a mini issue dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. My mother died of it when I was 19 and I had a scare earlier this year myself. Thankfully it was nothing but a fibroid but I can't help but feel my doom looms eventually with it too. I try to do a breast self exam but I don't really know if I'm doing it right.
So, though October is almost over, I pledge to knit as much as I can from the issue and donate it to someone going through the hell of breast cancer. (this doesn't mean I don't care if you have some other cancer, it's just this particular kind freaks me out the most right now.. and while we're on it, why don't they have Uterine/Ovarian/Cervical cancer awareness movements????)

| 10.24.04 (11:04 am) [edit] |
Not much knitting on Big Sack, had to run errands with the kids so I didn't have much hands-free time. Then I got this
done and had to hold my head in such a way that I couldn't knit.

Plus I have a mystery project going on so that's taking away from Big Sack as well.
I was on my way to fashioning my own needles but I decided against it because, well, I have just about everything I already need. Ok I don't have straights bigger than 10 and smaller than 4 but for the forseeable future I don't need them either. I guess making some size 17 and 19 straights for quick-knits with the Light and Lofty I have(and I have TONS) would be nice. But my needle guage doesn't go that high and I'd have NO way to sharpen the tips on those(without risking the loss of fingers  ).
I can still use the scultping clay to make my own beads though, since the beads I got from Fire Mountain Gems aren't nearly as big as I was expecting.
Oh, and if you see those K-Swiss sneakers with the reversible tongue? DON'T BUY them. I didn't have mine a MONTH and the tongue broke off in one. and No, I was not constantly reversing them. I put them on one side and left them that way. And now kaplooey!!
So, buyer beware!!

Ain't this cute??

No, really, not just SugarBoogers, but the hat!! I'm sorry, I don't have a pattern for this. It was just a spur-of-the-moment thing. She needed a hat, I had some leftover dyed Patons. So the two went together nicely and this is the result!
SugarBoogers is still at that stage where kids don't like things on their heads. So,after I took this pic, I crocheted some straps and attached them where earflaps would be. I would have made flaps, but the hat comes down sufficiently far enough not to warrant them. Took me most of 3 days to finish. The ribbing is doubled with some leftover Cascade 220 I had from my Fruity FMB. I think next time I won't double the yarn for the ribbing, that about killed my hands.
This is my latest progress on Big Sack:

I think I probably will have enough. I'm almost to the armhole shaping on the front and I've just about to start the 4th(out of 20) ball. So that's not too bad. Of course it wouldn't hurt to try and get more if and when I get the chance.

| Q&A |
| 10.20.04 (9:32 pm) [edit] |
Since I am not really able to answer questions or respond to comments to EVERYBODY that asks/comments I thought I'd make a post responding to what people have been saying here.
This, in place of the fact I have no pics to post :P
To Aggie and Susan, who love my big sack sweater: ThangQ And about my stitch markers. ThangQ too!
to Rebecca about how many skeins of Kersti I used for Clapotis: I bought 6 and was almost going to use them all when I decided to rip back and restart a smaller version.
To RobKnits: I'm glad you found my KR link. I thought I had my blog set to reduce the need to scroll sideways. I'm sorry if you have to. I've tried my best to keep the pics small enough to keep that from happening.
To all who enjoyed my Hallowig pic: ThangQ for your compliments. I love showing off my work!
For all those who gave their condolences about my recent felting disasters: Thanx for your encouragement and commiseration. I think I will leave the felted hats alone for a while. I sitll have yet to attempt Fuzzy Feet. I was told the Fiber Trend felted Clogs are better but right now I don't want to buy any more patterns. IF that pattern is one of the ones in the Felted Knits or Felt One, Knit Too books, then ok, cause I do have those..(just have to dig them out :P)
In the meantime I've been working on my Big Sack and also making a hat for little SugarBoogers. It's getting cold now and time for hats! WEEEEEE :D

| Guess what!? |
| 10.18.04 (2:00 pm) [edit] |
Remember this?

well now it's THIS:

That's right, I unwound the bastard! and I'm NOT the least bit upset. I ripped with GLEE. Why? because I'm going to turn Clapotis into a smaller version of it, PLUS have some fingerless gloves or mittens to match. Maybe even a blooming HAT!! So HA! You thought you had me WHIPPED Clapotis... You can't catch me, you can't even catch a COLD!
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeee *eyes swirling insanely*
I thought it over and I just didn't want to deal with trying to finish it. And I keep seeing those mitten/glove patterns so instead of having to buy more yarn, I'm going to make the scarf smaller and have something of a set! :D

| Finally! Something done! |
| 10.17.04 (7:40 am) [edit] |
Here's me in my Hallowig

It wasn't a bad pattern, just not well written and it got confusing near the end. But I got it done. I still have Clapotis to finish off but it's getting hard because I've already started my Big Sack Sweater:
I decided to start the front just to get an idea of how much yarn I'll have left to do the rest. And to get the cable out of the way. I like cabling, actually, but I've never had to put one on such a large item before. If for some odd reason I don't have enough for the sleeves once I finish the front and back, then I'll try to get more and stripe the sleeves. Maybe I'll get lucky and get the same lot number, but I'm not gonna pray on it or anything.. I can just make the striped sleeves a 'design element' (sure beats a wardrobe malfuntion  ).

| Swerve...*errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...crash* |
| 10.16.04 (12:09 pm) [edit] |
That's what I did with my knitting list yesterday. I really need to be more realistic with what I want to knit. Half the stuff I would have to buy yarn/needles that I don't already have. The rest, well I never really did check my inventory before buying, except, that I KNEW I wanted to use a fiber I don't already have, even if I have enough yarn in acryclic. Now, I'm not knocking acrylic, but truth is, I really DO like wool/blends better. Especially when it's getting cold out. I've got a ton of superwash wool, so that's warmth AND washability all in one. But it's going to this:

That's the Big Sack Sweater from Stitch N' Bitch. I figured I couldn't get the yarn in a color I'd prefer so I might as well get the yarn as is and dye it all. Each ball is only about 1.75 oz. Hmmm. Nah I'll leave it alone. I can always dye the Chaco for another Sophie
At least I can felt BAGS and not mess them up... that much heehee

Yeah, that's right, you guessed it... Felted F*cket is at it again. I don't know WHAT went wrong this time.. but I won't show you the results.. it's too heartbreaking.
Let's just say, It'll make a nice BOWL  !!
Anyway, Now I'm starting to worry if Fuzzy Feet is going to come out right. No pattern is without the posibility of errors but I've come to trust knitty's patterns without too much finagling. I'm going to have to write to Ms Burns and let her know her pattern is FARKERED. There's no way a hat that comes out just slightly larger than the finished size is going to felt and still BE that size.. and I KNOW it ain't me!!
|
|
|
| |
| Ok... |
| 10.14.04 (1:22 pm) [edit] |
So I thought I figured out why my last bucket hat was a disaster. Turns out, there was something else in the pattern that may have contributed to the hat coming out too shallow. I believe I have since come up with a solution and I'm going with that.
Here's the progress on that so far(yes, this means I chose the Bucket instead of Fuzzy Feet to do first):

I think I'm just gonna go ahead and finish up Clapotis this weekend, as well as the Hallowig, and maybe start Anouk and Fuzzy Feet.
Speaking of Anouk, it seems that it is NOT a full dress like it looks on the website, but rather, a smock thingy. Open on the side with just the side tabs to keep it 'closed'. Hmmm That would mean it's made flat. Well hell, I want to make it in the round, and that's what I'm a'gonna do!
ETA:
Bucket is ready for the machine!

|
|

| Happy Hallowig!! |
| 10.13.04 (10:46 am) [edit] |

This is my Hallowig. There's a knitalong for it I think, but I didn't join because I wasn't really planning on making it back when it started. But, I have been trying to come up with some extra WIP's and saw my stash of acrylic so I said what the heck.
No more progress on Clapotis, and I'm still deciding on what I'll start next. Charlotte is calling me but I still want to hold off on her til I'm done with Clapotis. There's Fuzzy Feet, and another Bucket hat, But I wanna see if I can get a wighead to block it on before I attempt to felt that. I guess I could just knit it up and lay it aside but once I'm ready to felt I just can't stop myself
Regardless of which I do first, THIS is the yarn I'm using for the Bucket:
I'd dyed it and forgot I had it. Since I've figured out why my last hat was a mess, I think I can do this one without screwing it up.
And yes, that's a Phase 10 deck on the side.. heehee. I've been playing that game for months now and hubby almost always beats me. While my brother is here we've been playing and we're both trying to defeat hubby  We'll see how that turns out.
|
|
|
| |
| Ok, maybe not... |
| 10.12.04 (12:25 am) [edit] |
There's been a change in the WIPs-to-be. It seems there was no Homespun on sale so, I didn't get any. Or, rather, there was one color on sale and it was NOT a color I'd want. So back to the drawing board. More than likely I'll need to just find the original yarn and use that..
I DID happen upon some bags of chunky Berella Whistler, which is a superwash wool. 20 balls of that would make a nice sweater, if I can dye it all one color nicely  And some Filatura Lanarota "Chaco", about which I've found NOTHING on the internet. I know sometimes manufacturers discontinue an item but you should still be able to find something about it, even if it's just a note saying, "We're discontinuing....".. Oh well. It's 100% wool and that's all that matters at this point. It's in an offwhite which means.. KOOL AID
In other knitting news, I've decided to go ahead and do a Hallowig like just about everyone else is  I'm using that multicolored Red heart I picked up a few months ago when I tried to make an umbilical cord hat. This should keep me occupied while I hunt for the Bernat Illusions I need for Topsecret.
I've learned also that the Beads I ordered from Fire Mountain Gems are on their way!! Eeeeeeeeeee I can't wait!! I've been trying to find better ways to finish off the ends of my stitch and row markers; sometimes they snag the yarn and that's not cool. So far, using crimping beads and headpins seem to be a better way than what I've been doing.. We'll have to see. I don't think I'll get deep into jewelry making, but making markers is fun and relaxing.

| knit list mania(or, What next?) |
| 10.10.04 (6:47 am) [edit] |
Yep, I've got it for sure now: Knitters' Block. I'm on my way down the off-ramp with Clapotis

and I'm not working on anything else. I can't think of what I want to do next but I do have a little list of things I keep seeing others doing which I never got around to. (keep in mind, I probably will NOT be doing another Clapotis any time soon).
Anouk(knitty.com) Top Secret, also from knitty a top-down incredible Raglan for: hubby, brother, and the 3 kids and socks for hubby and brother.
Hubby and brother's stuff will more than likely be something like an X-mas gift. These two look like they're about to deliver twins(I'm NOT the FATHER, heehee) any day now, so I'm sure their sweaters will take a while. Smiley's is having a sale right now and hopefully I'll be able to score the fixings for Top Secret there, if not, then freak it; I might as well get the yarn called for(Bernat Illusions, but if Smiley's has it, I'll get Homespun), and use that. Anouk will come from my acrylic stash. The other sweaters will be acrylic for the kids(if I have enough left after Anouk), and some nice wools for the men. Socks? That's where the dyed sock yarns come in. I've got that deep green Kroy I order a few months ago I can use that for my bro, but hubby will wear the stuff I dye(if he knows what's good for him  ).
All I need is Bro's measurements before he goes back home :P
And awayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy we go!

I hate being sick. I've caught a cold and it tends to get out of hand when you have asthma on top of that. It doesn't help that SugarBoogers is sprouting a molar and is cranky to beat the band.
Aside from that, I've learned the I'm going to have to cut Clapotis short. It seems I might not have enough yarn to complete the project as patterned. So instead of 13 pattern repeats in the midsection I did 10 before turning back and doing the decreases. If I use up all the yarn doing this, then at least I know I wouldn't have been able to do it the regular way.
So, what's my next project going to be? I have discovered an undyed ball of wool I forgot i had.*conspiratorial grin*. I could dye it and make Fuzzy Feet from knitty. I could use the slipper now more than a hat anyway... In fact, it's not even cold enough for Clapotis...

You are Cashmere. You are sophisticated and luxe. You can often be found in high-end boutiques and hobnobbing with the upper crust. You are one of the beautiful people and you don't let anyone forget it!
What kind of yarn are you? brought to you by Quizilla
Well, whadayaknow? Last time I took this quiz I was Dishcloth cotton, Now I guess I'm moving up in the world huh?

I want to thank everyone for their encouragement concerning my felted hat mess.. But trust me, that hat won't fit any human being with a complete head!! it's not deep enough to fit an adult and it'd frill out too far to fit a smaller person. I've tried holding it down with a huge rubberband on the baby and it didn't look right!! I've decided to attempt to shrink it more and make a potholder out of it. Loard knows I could USE a set! :)
Now, to figure out what went wrong with the pre-felted hat that it wasn't even big enough before I felted it. I've seen pics of other felted buckets prior to felting and if my memory serves me correctly it DID cover the person's face. so My hat clearly wasn't big enough to begin with
My next venture was going to be Fuzzy Feet from knitty.com. I'm starting to think maybe that's not such a good idea.. And I so desperately wanted to make them too!!
Clapotis is still coming along. I'm finding myself having to move my row markers around; I didn't have enough clasps to make more and I won't have time to get anywhere to get more supplies. My brother is coming to town Friday!! to visit!! I haven't seeen him in 8 years. He is former military and lives in Alaska. I wish he'd come back to NY but well, it's his life and he and his family are happy there. I DO intend to measure his feet so I can make some socks for him for X-mas(teehee). Too bad he won't be bringing his kids with him, but it's school season. Maybe one day I'll get around to flying out that way.. Nah..
Oh, Orangeyarn, if you're reading this?... the felted bucket hat came from Chicknits.com I tried to post the link in a previous post but the blasted thing went haywire and won't post it. You know what to do to the URL to make it work, I assume. :)

Would you look at this shit!?
That won't even fit on my head right! I don't know what went wrong  It's not that I felted it too long. It wasn't big enough to start.. and I was knitting to guage.. I can't believe it. And my hand dyed yarn to boot!! Ugh.. @#$^%*%$#$%

The NYC Knit Out & Crochet is today!! Fun Fun Fun(I hope, 'cause I've never been to one before...). Pics and commentary later!!
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEE
ETA:
Well, The KnitOut and Crochet 2004 was ok... but it could have been better. I got a few goodies(which in the end I realized were mostly past issues instead of current ones--really, what's the point?), but I really wanted to stay for the Fashion shows and I couldn't. Why? Because they had the seating area all out in the damn sun!!! What? It wouldhave been too much to ask to have a canopy of some sort so people wouldn't have to BAKE to see the fashion show?? I found that tacky and mean. So I hopped over to the bookstore to use the facilities and get a few things. Check out the goodies:

While on my way there, and back, I worked on my Felted Bucket Hat from Chic Knits.

And I forgot to show you the socks I made from the overdyed Kroy:

Enjoy!

Not quite gone. This is Clapotis so far:

Sweater is done(see previous post) and now it's time to start something else to switch off with Clapotis.
My next project: Felted Bucket Hat from

| And without further adieu!!! |
| 10.01.04 (8:26 am) [edit] |

It's a really wonky pic but it's finally DONE! All I need do now, is weave in those bloody ends and it's ready to go! Even nonplussed hubby was impressed that I'd gotten it done, and it looks great. I think next time though, if the ribbing is to be a different color than the area it's joined to, I'll do the pick-up row with the old color and THEN join the ribbing color.
If it's cool enough, I may wear it out tomorrow night! :D
In other news, Clapotis is once again in hand. I stopped when I ran out of the second ball of yarn to finish the sweater.
