Mooooving right along!
01.31.05 (5:58 am) [edit]
I finished the body of CPRRL and started a sleeve. Now I know why the thing is done in ribbing; I got all confuzzled with the pattern stitch(when I KNOW I had the right number of stitches), so I decided to just do regular stocking stitch. But, the sleeve gapes around my wrist. Lovely. Well, there goes those bell sleeves I was going to put on the Top-Down Raglan! You can't really see it there
but inside the ruffle is a row of 2x1 ribbing and a row of 2x2 ribbing. Neither one worked out properly. I remember someone saying there was an error for this pattern but it was the small size. Evidently it's for the larger size too. I found another reason as to why I'll need sleeves on this sweater. I tried on the body of it and the arm holes go a little below where my bra would go, so my bra would be visible. I'm sure you can tell by my pics I'm NOT the kind of person who can go bra-less!! So sleeves are on for sure! I don't see myself being nutto enough to attempt this pattern again so I probably won't be making a spring cotton version. But never say never, right?(wait, I didn't say 'never' in that sentence...ANYWHO!)
Another thing is that I've gotten back into the Magic Loop. It started with those mittens I made my son. I didn't feel like digging for the size 4 dpns I'd need to make the ribbing on them, so I pulled out my old size 4 circ(which I did buy for the ML wayyyyyy back when, but never used it!) to start them on, and then finished on size 6 caseins. When I found I needed the size 7 dpns which are already involved in another project to make the sleeves of CPRRL, I said Hey, another opportunity to practice ML. So there it is.
A few knitting buddies out in Cyber space are going to get Raok'ed. If only they knew who they were, teehee.

CPRRL Resurrected!
01.30.05 (12:22 pm) [edit]
I kept my promise. Or at least part of it. I said I was going to get the body of CPRRL done before I started work this weekend and that's exactly what I set out to do. Would you believe, I was actually AFRAID to pick it up again for fear I wouldn't remember where I was on it? I finally remembered that I had stopped at the point right before the staggered shoulder bind-off. So I did that and sewed the shoulder seams and that was that. This is where I am on the neckband:

two more rows of this and that's done. I could go sleeveless but I don't think that'd be a good idea. I mean, it's wool, so that would mean it's meant for a cool temperature and if that's the case, why would you go sleeveless? I could see this pattern being done in a worsted cotton for the spring/summer and THAT could be sleeveless. But this puppy's getting sleeves. It'll give me something to work on during my commute.
Sherry told me I could get a good messenger bag from Walmart(or Target, or Kmart, since there's no WALMART NEAR ME SHERRY!!). And I do plan to get one. But right now I've got my trusty pink(yes, anti-hubby-stealing-my-ba g pink) Jansport knapsack to do the work of transporting my beloved projects with me. I hope I can get a locker to store my stuff in(dreammmmmm dream dream dreeeeeeeeeaaam...).
I also need to get some metal picture frames to cover in clay. I need one for this:

It's my first successful image transfer onto polymer clay! I'd previously fookered about 5 different images and then I got some bright ideas(ThangQ Tesse, Tonja, and every one at PCC!) to help me get a better transfer. I hope to do more of these in the near future.
P.S. The first person who can email me the number of 'that's in this blog will get a BRAND NEW CAR!!*Play Price is Right Themesong here*

Edit to add:
This is the completed pair of mittens:

Almost finished a quick mitten for JV. The gloves his father bought him are WAY to big. So I thought I could make him some loosely based on this pattern. Didn't even take me two hours.

Secret Pal Help
01.28.05 (12:52 pm) [edit]
Since I was asked... I thought I'd answer! I just posted on Knitter's Review but I'll put it here as well :
I've got a set of DPNS in various materials, all the way from size 0 to size 10.5. a set of Denise Needles and the extra 52" cord you can buy seperately(got it from Elann.com), metal, bamboo, and some plastic straights in sizes 4,5,6,7,8,9,10(maybe 10.5 but not sure). And addi turbo circs sizes 1,2,3,4,5,(maybe 6, not sure),7,8,11, and 13, in various lengths, most of them 40" to do the magic loop. And an Inox size one, 32 inches.
I don't really need storage for straights and dpns. I like putting them in my trusty knitting cup! But for circs.. yeah I could use something for them. As it stands, I have them in my trusty knitting cup and the cords are all over creation like Buckwheat's hair!
I start working next Friday so until then I have to bang out a few projects so they don't straggle. That would mean finishing up at LEAST the body of CPRRL, and fixing that wayward Big Sack Sleeve. I'm loathe to start a pair of socks until I try some fair isle socks a-la-Nordic Mittens. and for that I really wanna get some FRESH yarn. Elann is having a sale on some sock yarns I wanna try. They and WEBS have Jo Sharp DK wool on sale!! But I'm afraid I won't get paid before the sale ends(or the good colors run out!) and these are close-outs so once it's gone, it's GONE.
And remember my friend's Pop-Tops? I had to frog my old London Beanie(really, it was too big anyway) so I could get that teal blue to help finish the poptops. Of course that wasn't enough so I have decided these will be some two-toned mittens. Pics later or tomorrow. She said she wouldn't mind, so, I'm happy! She's just so psyched by how cool they are!
Check this out!!

it's... funny looking, isn't it? it's a tin I covered in clay, for my knitting notions. The little box I have now is getting stuffed and it doesn't stay closed unless I use a rubberband around it and that is just SO tacky!!
I've joined up with a RAOK of sorts. I'm not on the receiving end but SOMEONE who reads this board is going to get something they'd like.. teehee

PopTop Again.
01.24.05 (5:32 am) [edit]
This time the mittens are for a friend of mine. She saw mine and said I gotta have a pair. I tried teaching her to crochet but that fell through the hole. I haven't gotten around to attempting to teach her to knit, as I somehow don't think she'd be interested. Then again, what if she's good at it? I could definitely foist, er, donate some of my huge stash to her! But she'd have to get her own needles. I ain't partin' with those!

Check THIS out!

Ain't THAT a bitch! I hate snow. It's pretty to look at but not when you gotta go OUT in it. Ok, for the record I DON'T have to go out in it til Monday at the earliest. But STILL. It's ankle/shin deep already and it's NOT stopping. I haven't seen a bus go by in HOURS. Cars creeping by, some of them bumping into each other.
But the mailman delivers( of course, he came long before the snow even started), and deliver he did!
My Secret Pal has a wild sense of humor, just like me! She sent me some humor clippings from The New Yorker, with a cute card that says "Play with your food" on the back!

But the special gem is that little folded card-y job at the bottom here:

which says, "There is only one pretty child in the world, and Every Mother has it" Ain't THAT the truth!
Needless to say I was tickled pink when I opened the card. I don't normally read the New Yorker, Secret Pal, so this was a treat! ThangQ Whoever you are!!

Renewal, part deux
01.21.05 (10:24 am) [edit]
I promised myself I wasn't going to let 2005 get away from me like 2003 and 2004 did. I finally got a job!! Which means more money for hobbies, but less time to actually DO them. The ride to work is long enough to try and get a few rows in on my knitwork, but it's a popular line and I might not be able to SIT half the time(ain't THAT a bitch?).
I'm about half way through another pair of Pop-top Mittens for a friend who's been bugging for 'mittens like those!' for a while now. And CPRRL is still trudging along. Because of the short bus ride Big Sack will continue to be an at-home project. Which reminds me. I'll need a locker-friendly knitting bag. I have a big pink Jansport knapsack but I don't think that'll be fun/easy to knit from. I'd like something that can go over my head/shoulder crosswise. So I don't have to put my bag on the floor. That was the GOOD thing about my Rice Basket. Since I'll be needing a certain color of clothing for work, I might be able to find a bag I like at one of the stores around the mall. I really don't want to splurge on such a simple item. Yes, a good knitting bag is necessary but I don't wanna pay a million dollars.
Question answered: Yes, Sculpey is a kind of Polymer clay. I don't use it though. I prefer Premo, and I've recently acquired some Kato PolyClay which is supposedly better than the others.. Who knows.

Lucky Day!
01.18.05 (3:08 pm) [edit]
Wouldn't you know it? I got lucky today! An entrepreneur and fellow clayer has sent me samples of the Kato PolyClay I'd been wanting to try. I can't thank her enough for her generosity. I have yet to work with it, but by feel I can tell already that I'll love it!!

She even sent me some pamphlets with ideas for using the clay. And a pretty Thank You card to boot. Thank YOU Rickie Beth! Her site's on it's way up. Visit it here.
I also got a beautiful card from my Knitty Secret Pal! I'm not a very nature-oriented person but I do love shots of wild animals in their natural habitats. She even wrote a little anecdote about the deer in the picture! Neat huh? Or, to quote my distant-knitting-buddy, Michelle, "How cool is that?"!
ThangQ all for your compliments on my Kersti 'set'. I used colorway number K122. I really like it. There was more of it at KnitNY but the dyelot appeared to be different and I had to sit and really look at all before picking a skein when I went back for that extra skein(which I didn't need btw). I enjoy knitting with Kersti and KPPPM.

London meets Canada
01.18.05 (7:17 am) [edit]
It was only a matter of time before I'd get around to making a hat to match the colors of Clapotis. In a few hours I managed to whip up this:

I used the London Beanie hat pattern with the leftovers of the Koigu Kersti I used in the Clapotis scarf. So now, with those and the Pop-top mittens I have a matching set! Sorta. And would you believe, I still have some of the Kersti left? I've got a friend who wants a pair of mittens like mine, so I guess that's where it's gonna go.
Still thinking up ways to surprise my secret pal. It's been getting colder here every day but I've already got some stuff. I just have to get out there and mail it out! It's coming, fear not!
As for clay, I'm working on some secret stuff and so I can't post it here right now. Also, look for some changes on this page as I might just stay here after all.

Stitch N Bitch Nation!
01.15.05 (1:41 pm) [edit]
I was shopping around and found "Stitch N Bitch Nation", by Debbie Stoller. At first I wasn't sure I was going to even buy this book. I already put my foot down about "Knit Wit", by Amy Singer, simply because it didn't make any sense to buy a book half full of stuff that's already free on the net. Not to mention none of the repeats were 'adjusted' enough to fit me so to hell with it. Nice Try.
I'm still perusing "SnB Nation" but I like what I see so far. I now know what everyone is referring to by "Yo, Drop It!". That IS a pretty good idea for a scarf and... It'd give me a chance to test some ribbon yarns. I've done the fur and eyelash and mohair bit, now it's time for something a bit more.. muted(?), yet still, functional. I can't see it keeping my neck warm like my good old friend Clapotis, so this'll be a purely fashion-y Springtime scarf.
I'm still thinking about how I'm going to combine this blog with the claying blog. And I'm also on the verge of moving everything OFF this service and into a different one. I appologize(even though I know I shouldn't because it's NOT my fault)for the outages that have kept my faithful readers from viewing the page. I will of course alert you when the move is occuring/finalized. You can always come here for archival posts.
It's been a crazy few weeks. Everyone in this house has had some sort of sickness, one behind the other. Some even twice. I even had to drag myself to the ER the other day just to get some help and rest. I'm ok now, though. I seriously believe it's an absolute wonder that every woman with more than one child doesn't die young, with the way I've been running. Nobody thinks about Mommy getting sick. It's always about comforting OTHERS. Got Dammit.
Anyway. I got out today and had some quiet time. No screaming children, No chirping birds, no snoring husband. Just me, my knitting basket-bag, and a willing Mastercard  That's when I found some goodies for my secret pal. Sorry, can't mention them or she might see before hand. I sure hope she likes this month's Box!

01.12.05 (2:41 pm) [edit]
the Irish Hiking Scarf is done! I read on another knitter's blog(I'm sorry I forget who) that although she likes the IHS itself, it's a rather tedious pattern. Or something to that effect. At any rate, I agree. Hubby liked it and took off with it before I could take a pic of him in it(I love you Frank). So much for that.
It's ON. Knitty Secret Pals version 3 is about to begin! I have NO idea how I'm going to work off my recipients list, but I'm already putting together a list of things she might like. I just hope that if I have to order any of it the shipping doesn't take forever. This is going to be fun! I'm nervous. I hope I don't upset her!! Teehee. If you're reading this.. This might mean YOU! :P
I dropped the other projects to finish up the IHS so, I'll be picking up the CPRRL later on tonight. I've all but given up hope on Big Sack, as it sits forlornly in my basket waiting to be fixed/finished. I almost forgot WHY I stopped; now that I remember I shudder! Since I'm on a strict crafting budget, I'll just have to work from what I've already got. Now I'm wishing I didn't dye some of the yarns I did because now I don't have enough undyed left to start some of the things I wanna try. I've been given a confidence booster pertaining to the Nordic Mittens from IW knits Winter 2004, so I just might have to splurge and get some of that Brown sheep Naturespun Sport to work them in.. (hint) teehee.

Wooooooo forgive me for not posting lately. I haven't really had much to say. All previously mentioned projects are still underway. I'm sure you know what they are and if you don't, the archives should have the answer. I've been thinking about condensing my two blogs into one.
There was a time when I put all sorts of entries on my blog instead of just knitting, but since I've picked up polymer clay as another hobby I don't know if I want to hold down two separate blogs. I'm also considering returning to thread crochet. And that would mean ANOTHER blog. I know of one person who thinks I should just put everything on one. What about you?

A hiking we will go....
01.03.05 (3:54 pm) [edit]

this is where I'm at on the Irish Hiking Scarf I'm making for hubby. he's the only one left with no scarf, other than SugarBoogers, but I don't want her to choke so she doesn't get one for a while yet. It's a pretty straightforward pattern, no constant changes or surprises. I almost forgot to twist the cable there at the top but.. I remembered at the last minute :)
And yes, that's a DPN with a rubberband on the end of it! The pattern calls for a size 8 needle and dammit I didn't feel like diggin in my needle storage for the regular 8s. I knew I wouldn't really need the regular, long ones.. so I just put bands on the ends of these.. Works for me!

Scarf Stylin'
01.02.05 (10:57 am) [edit]
I've been reading alot about this Irish Hiking Scarf. Since I'm not afraid to cable I might as well give it a shot. Hubby could use a scarf and I need to do something with all this black Patons Classic Wool I've got sitting here at my ankles for about a month! There's supposedly a knit along but I missed it! Here's the pattern if you would like to try it.
I've been thinking about those Nordic Mittens. Then I get chills. I really like the coloring and the Fair Isle Pattern. But that thumb gusset business intimidates me. And I realllly don't need another pair of mittens. So I'm going to GO THERE and use that chart for SOCKS. WEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Year of Renewal
01.01.05 (6:18 am) [edit]
Happy 2005!! I went to a party last night. There weren't a lot of guests, but everyone there wore nice party stuff; thighs. legs, and cleaveage showing, tight jeans. I wore this:
with a pair of baggy jeans and some sneakers.. I really need to lose 100 lbs because I'm SICK of looking like a fat pig and having to dress like a construction worker because I don't look good in sexy clothing! Enough of that "Oh but big women can be sexy too.. " Bull! Girdles don't solve my problems.. if they did, I'd wear a girdle on my neck and legs too!
Well at least it's getting off to a more harmonious start for the kids:
I told them that if they didn't get along more I'd beat them til they did! How's that for family harmony
Poor little SugarBoogers, though. She rather enjoyed jumping up and down cheering them on as they tried to kill each other
Knitting Resolution: To FINISH Projects I start! I know a lot of knitters(read: all) make this resolution at some point. Even if it's not at the beginning of the year. I've got Big Sack still needing the errant sleeve reknit, so that I can assemble it and WEAR the damn thing before Spring. CPRRL is not a problem.. yet. I'm still working on the back portion, as I've been running around and forgot to take another ball of purple with me, so I didn't bother to knit on the trains only to run out of yarn and be thoroughly pissed off.
I was seriously considering some Nordic Mittens a la :
But, I've just read the pattern and OMG! I don't think I can keep up with all those color changes AND follow the chart AND remember to add extra stitches to form the thumb gussets. I'll have to adapt it to two or three colors instead. ThangQ CookNKnit for This copy of Interweave Mag. I shall guard it with my life! *takes mag and puts it in the freezer behind the peas, where the kids will not touch it *
I've seen a few other pretty patterns in this mag too. I'll have to re-peruse(is that a word?) it and see just what I'd like to try, keeping in mind, that if I start, I'll have to finish.
I don't have a listing of all the stuff I want to knit. I tried doing that and I didn't stick to it. I don't know why.. I usually stick to my lists and accomplish whatever goals the list lead me to. But knitting is so... fickle? And likes to change. So, I guess this year I'll go with the flow.. as long as I finish.
